May 26 @ Clerkenwell BNI

Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

We were in the showcase “Westminster Room” at The Old Sessions House this week, lots of room to move, speak and mingle.

Moving, speaking and mingling with the best of them, Michelle Fanus (Dynamyk Events, event manager) was sitting in the centre seat at The Top Table. She was standing in for our illustrious Chapter Director, Alison Trickey (Pollen Nation, florist) who was “buried in roses” this morning, while she prepared for three big weddings this weekend. Michelle did a great job her first time in the Big Chair, the meeting went smoothly and we hardly missed Alison at all (kidding! Her absence left an almost immeasurable void in our lives… too much?).

David Miles (Divadani, internet marketing) thought that sitting beside the chapter’s photographer (Charles Gervais, Both Hemispheres Photography) would ensure that he’d avoid the unblinking gaze of the lens, and inclusion in this blog. David forgot that Charles’ camera, while large, is entirely portable, and that he could get up and shoot from a different angle (Charles and David obviously need to have another 1-1). Turns out that this was a good thing, because David had a lot to say during his Network Education Slot about finding and converting Visitors (this was an interactive Education slot, with several members adding their own strategies). Some of the approaches chapter members use for finding visitors include:

  • 1) seek out people who are already part of networking groups, and ask them if they want to extend their networking circle (with the number one BNI chapter in London!).
  • 2) talk to your clients and suppliers
  • 3) when a cold caller calls you, turn the tables and invite them to BNI. This has been a particularly successful strategy for Ian Selvan (Centrepoint Software, accounting and CRM software)

Any other strategies? Share them in the comments.

There was a good round of 60 second presentations today, with our subs Claudia (Made Simple Group) and Riki Hutchinson (Drinks Lover, wine merchants) fitting in quite nicely to the rather unique chapter that is BNI Clerkenwell.

The 10 minute presentation was given by Debbie Neville (Neville & Rowe Ltd, business reporting software). Debbie used a polished visual presentation to detail the how’s and why’s of their business analytics software: “ImpactEdge”. Some of the members were surprised to learn that ImpactEdge was developed entirely in-house. Debbie is looking for referrals to Finance Directors of Manufacturing and Productions Companies, Hedge Funds, Pension Funds and to “Introducers” (accountants and businesses advisors).

The BNI-ness of the morning didn’t end with the conclusion of the formal meeting. As usual, many BNI Clerkenwell members retired to local cafés to have follow-on one-to-one meetings:

3 Peaks follow-up from Andrew Pegg

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

Hi All

You will have had the updates from Emma Wilson on our little tour of Britain via its cloud topped peaks.

Whilst it was certainly a challenge, it proved to me what can actually be done in little more than a 24 hour period on very little sleep and in adverse weather conditions in various parts of Britain. The key was our commitment as a team to complete the challenge and truly Emma did so with very modest training and experience of such weather and lots of pure guts and determination to keep going.

We tried hard to think of what Ian might have forgotten and were hard pushed to. Equally, we could not think of anything he did not have two of which saved the day for at least one person in another group! He really helped with all the aspects of making sure we were as warm and as dry as possible, nourished with nuts and always, always looking on the positive side – no matter which way the wind and the rain was driving into us.

I think we could have all followed Ali’s training programme from some weeks out – John from BNI Capital and his friend were one of only two BNI teams that completed the challenge in the walking time “allowed” of 14 hours out of the 24 hours for the Challenge*. Our times were:

Ben Nevis – 6 hrs 10 (4.10pm-10.20pm)
Scar Fell – 4 hrs 30 (7.20am-11.50am)
Snowdon – 4 hrs 20 (6.10pm – 10.30pm)
Total – c.15 hours

*The driving time allowed of 10 hours was ignored due to quite a lot of Bank Holiday traffic which extended most groups’ travel time.

Overall we set a modest pace, and if we had been a bit quicker overall (particularly coming down Ben Nevis), we would have been close to the target time. The challenge was characterised by people racing past us – gutting – (up and down), but many failed to complete as a team due to injury etc. There is a lesson in that…

For my part, I helped to make sure we were on the right route, including putting the GPS on at 5.30am in the fog and dark to help Richard from the Made Simple Group establish where we were to get to the start point for Scar Fell. The lesson that time was trusting “SatNav” and after coming to a sign which says “No coaches or no Mini-buses Beyond This Point – Ignore Your SatNav”. Where do you go from there!

You will have heard us asking for a driver for the challenge.

Without Howard and Richard D’Silva there would have been no Challenge for us. Firstly, Howard’s generosity in providing the bus with fuel etc meant that we could fully take part and so as ever there is a huge thanks to Howard for that. A huge thanks however must also go to Richard who not only drove us to the Peaks, in the middle of the night, in rain and fog with little sleep but also took care of whatever needed to be done from ensuring that we had hot food and water to driving us well out of his way (30+ miles) to get us to our B&B after Snowdon after midnight before getting to bed himself. Nothing was a problem – he was a real ambassador for Westbury and the MSG. Having been cold, wet and tired knowing that this was all in hand was really appreciated.

So all in all, I think it is fair to say that we all got something for ourselves out of this challenge. You will have to ask us what that was… and the best and worst bits…. For me one of the best was coming out of the rain and cloud on Snowdon and seeing the beautiful view of the sheer north face, the mountain railway curling down the hillside along with our route to Llanberis and the glacial valley over the ridge… along with my knee aching with every step…

So, to our Event! Yes, it is after the “Event” but it will be a celebration! We hope the MSG guys will be there too and the ones from Wimbledon who were great (time +20). It is also a great opportunity to celebrate and thank everyone in the Chapter for your contribution to Bliss this year. Yes we have been banging on about sponsorship – but we also know how much in time as well as gifts as well as money that you have already put into the mix.

To make it all worthwhile we do need people there – ideally over 200 – so please do invite everyone you know and if they can’t come, still ask them to buy a ticket for a worthy cause.

We should have the tickets on Thursday and Ian will tell you more then.

Thanks for reading – and for being behind us (as well as the wind as Ian would say).

Ben Nevis conquered!

Sunday, May 29th, 2011

Hi clerkenwell,

Team completed Ben Nevis at 10pm last night and completed scarfel this morning. It’s another world up there – snow blizzards on Ben Nevis and 70 mile per hour winds on scarfel. Been very tough weather conditions up there and we got lost on journey to scarfel so all running behind but determined to finish the last mountain. Our legs have seized up now, blisters come out and all completely exhausted running on just a few hours sleep in the mini bus. The pyg track at snowdon is lots of vertical climbing we should arrive there about 5.30 and straight up to get done before nightfall.

If we can get just giving upto £750 this weekend – that means with giftaid we are upto £1000 for this weekend which would be very very motivating! please help us spread the link

First 3 Peaks update

Saturday, May 28th, 2011

Morning clerkenwell,

This message comes from Andrew, Ian, ali and Emma live from the mini bus hurtling towards fort William at Ben. Nevis.

Every time someone is adding to our justgiving page we are getting an update with the message and how much. This is already causing excitement and spurring us on – we haven’t even started climbing yet so please all promote our page to your contacts this weekend! We are going to need lots of encouragement looking at the weather forecast.

http://www.justgiving.com/bni-3peaks-challenge-clerkenwell

Latest Ben Nevis forecast is 50mph winds, snow blizzards and minus 17 at the summit. We are likely to be starting slightly earlier than planned at about 3pm for safety and to beat nightfall as the conditions are quite trecherous.

We will send you these updates and photos when we can – a lot of areas have no signal (snowdon for sure) so don’t panic if you don’t get an update -we are possibly just out of range. Phone batteries also will not last.

Here is how we prepared last night with the team from capital and wimbledon half way on our journey in Carlisle. Just made our last stop for supplies ready to cook on our stove.

All feeling positive and excited – if a little wary about the weather. Need all your help with sponsorship! Hope you are having nice weekends.

Great 10 minutes from Alison of Pollen Nation

Monday, August 16th, 2010

Alison of Pollen Nation did her 10 minute presentation recently, and her approach was particularly informative.

After setting up a little florist’s studio in the centre of our meeting room, Alison showed us her expertise and passion for her business by helping volunteer “bride”, Emma Wilson of Currency Solutions, to design her perfect table bouquet. As you can see from the accompanying photos (courtesy of Charles Gervais, Both Hemispheres Photography), Alison brought in an array of beautiful flowers and built a table setting right in front of us, according to the wishes of her “bride” (who did such a stellar job, I wonder if perhaps she is secretly getting married soon–kidding!). We got to see not only Alison’s creative side, but also how professionally she dealt with a nervous bride who needed a little emotional support and guidance.

Sometimes it’s difficult for BNI members to really understand the different businesses that make up our chapter. A demonstration like this, where you can see exactly what a person does, can be particularly effective. Well done Alison!

Mentoring Programme from Education Slot 29/07/10

Sunday, August 1st, 2010

In Greek mythology: Méntōr; gen.: was the son of Alcumus, in his old age, a friend of Odysseus. When Odysseus left for the Trojan War he placed Mentor in charge of his son, Telemachus and of his palace.
The first recorded modern usage of the term can be traced to a book entitled “Les Aventures de Telemaque”, by the French writer Francois Fenelon. In the book the lead character is that of Mentor. This book was published in 1699 and was very popular during the 18th century and the modern application of the term can be traced to this publication.
This is the source of the modern use of the word mentor: a trusted friend, counselor or teacher, usually a more experienced person. Some professions have ‘mentoring programmes’ in which newcomers are paired with more experienced people, who advise them and serve as examples as they advance. Schools sometimes offer mentoring programs to new students, or students having difficulties.
Today mentors provide expertise to less experienced individuals to help them advance their careers, enhance their education, and build their networks. In many different arenas people have benefited from being part of a mentoring relationship.
The receiver of mentorship was traditionally referred to as a protégé or apprentice.

BNI now has a mentorship programme for new members and has formalised the process to ensure new member success and thus the success of the whole chapter.

This programme includes a mentor/mentee written agreement.

I visited the BNI ISIS chapter near Ealing in February. They have a very strong mentor programme there. One of the outcome of this is that they have grown their chapter in less than a year from just over 20 members to 38 members.

Referrals have exploded at BNI ISIS and there is a real energy and vibrancy in their chapter. Their success can also be attributed to strong, active ‘power groups’ in their chapter.

As a chapter in BNI Clerkenwell we are stronger as a team than individually. By mentoring new members we are acting as one united body rather than a group of individuals. We will sow the results in terms of referrals and business generated as a result of these referrals.

BNI is about giver’s gain and without new blood in our chapter and a formalised mentoring programme that mentors and mentees are held to account for, we will not grow our chapter. We will stagnate or shrink.

This is more about power teams than mentorship. I have an off market property in Sussex Gardens, W2, next to Hyde Park. Adam told me on Thursday he had a developer who could be interested.

We are now meeting up on Tuesday with the agent representing the private seller along with Adam’s developer colleague with a view to develop the 4 flats. This is a power team in action and our working as one body rather than individuals.

So I am inspired by 2 new developments at our chapter:

1. formalised mentor programme
2. power teams

I welcome your comments and suggestions.
