Sion Whellens is a project manager and business development director at Calverts, the UK’s leading creative design and printing co-operative. Social and environmental responsibility are at the heart of the company’s business ethos.
Calverts was founded in 1977 in Clerkenwell,
and is now located in Bethnal
Green, serving clients across the capital and the UK.
Calverts attracts work from commercial, voluntary and public sector organisations,
as well as arts, educational and community enterprises. We produce print
for some of the UK’s most innovative design agencies, including
Thomas Matthews, To The Point and Wave Design. Calverts also serves micro
businesses and self-publishers.
Sion Whellens graduated in 1979 with an English honours degree from York University. It was while editing the student newspaper that he decided to pursue a career in the noble craft of printing. His postgraduate education at the London College of Printing was followed by a long and varied apprenticeship, and he joined the Calverts co-operative in 1983. He has worked in the trade as a machine minder, guillotine operator, estimator, production manager, typesetter, salesman and account handler.
Sion has always been interested in the networked, co-operative approach to business as a sustainable alternative to corporatism. After 26 years, his enthusiasm for well designed and executed print with lower environmental impacts is undiminished.
